Ethereum at $1,651: Wallet Boom Meets Leverage Risk

Key point

Ethereum is currently trading at $1,651.05, up 0.7% on the day — with a market capitalization of $199.50 billion according to CoinGecko's real-time data. The number itself doesn't say much, but the tension behind it does: on-chain metrics (wallet count, exchange reserves) sketch out a slowly maturing bull narrative, while Binance's derivatives market sits on record leverage atop spot liquidity that is thinner than ever. The market is sending a dual signal, and in the short term, the two signals are working against each other.

This weekly overview examines what the numbers actually show, why ETH cannot break through psychological levels, why it lags behind BTC at a 56.3% dominance reading, and what to watch in the coming weeks. The take is our own, not financial advice — we've seen at the market's turning points over the past two years that such stalemates can break either way.

The $1,651 stalemate — what does the real market data show?

In its June 11 analysis, crypto.news still mentions a $1,616 level; by the time this article is written, the price has moved up by roughly 2%. The difference is small but telling: ETH is slowly attempting to climb in small steps, while the total crypto market capitalization stands at $2.23 trillion and Bitcoin dominance is 56.3%. The latter number is key: with BTC's weight this high, altcoins — including Ethereum — have historically moved against the wind. For comparison, BNB stands at $595.24 over the same 24-hour window (+1.2%), with a market cap of $80.28 billion; NEAR fell 2.6% to $2.04. The altcoin segment is therefore not uniform, but ETH isn't standing out either — it's mostly moving sideways.

In our view, ETH isn't weak in this environment because something is structurally wrong with it, but because we're in a cycle phase where capital first flows into Bitcoin and only later trickles further out. The question is when — and whether at all in this cycle — that trickle-down begins.

The bullish signal: wallet count approaching 200 million and dwindling exchange reserves

The crypto.news analysis highlights two on-chain data points that are unambiguously positive in the long run: the number of Ethereum wallets is approaching 200 million, and the amount of ETH held on centralized exchanges is steadily declining. The wallet count signals adoption, while the reserve drawdown signals accumulation — or at least a shift toward self-custody. Etherscan's public data also confirms a sustained rise in active addresses.

This kind of on-chain dynamic was present in the early stages of the 2020–2021 cycle as well, before prices made any meaningful move. At the same time — and here comes the critical nuance — a high wallet count is no guarantee of price appreciation. Many new wallets may be inactive, airdrop hunters, or a dozen addresses belonging to a single user. The reserve drawdown is a more meaningful signal, but it too should be interpreted alongside the staked ETH supply: if a large share of the drawdown is migration into staking, that's not the same as long-term cold storage accumulation.

The message, then: yes, a bullish backdrop — but be cautious about over-interpreting it.

The bear trap: record leverage on Binance's derivatives market

The same crypto.news analysis points out that leverage on Binance's ETH derivatives market is at record levels, while spot demand is weak. This is a classic, familiar pattern: traders position with long contracts on an expected upside breakout, but there isn't the buying power on the spot side to provide a floor under the price during a sudden downward move.

The mechanism is simple and ruthless: if the price drops a few percent, overextended long positions get liquidated, the resulting forced selling causes further declines, which triggers further liquidations. Such a cascade from the current $1,651 level could push the price below $1,500 — not because that's where the fair value lies, but because that's where stop-loss and liquidation levels reach down.

It's worth naming the market psychology at play here: when wallet counts are hitting records and every headline is about institutional accumulation, retail enters with FOMO and rising leverage. The this time will be different feeling is present now as well — and that's exactly the sentiment that fuels liquidation cascades. Our own mixed experience in these situations: moderate use of leverage, or favoring spot positions, can help weather such shocks.

THE DUAL SIGNAL — why can the two forces reinforce each other?

Here it's worth highlighting an angle that the broader crypto press rarely emphasizes: the same on-chain accumulation that is bullish long-term is precisely what makes the derivatives market more vulnerable short-term. Why? Because if a significant share of ETH coins migrate off exchanges into self-custody or staking, the spot order book thins out. With a thinner order book, the same liquidation wave causes a larger price move, because there's less buy-side liquidity to absorb it. The bullish on-chain story and the bearish derivatives story aren't two separate narratives — they reinforce each other toward short-term volatility.

This isn't a forecast, it's mechanics. Our take: these two signals should be read together, not separately.

ETH vs. BTC dominance — why is Ethereum lagging in the 2026 cycle?

With BTC dominance at 56.3%, the ETH/BTC ratio is behaving like a quiet loser. There are several structural reasons for this, and it's worth separating them from cyclical ones:

The big picture — what should an investor watch?

If the week's message had to be compressed into a single sentence: ETH's long-term fundamentals are strengthening, while its short-term market structure is more fragile than the headlines suggest.

Specific key levels and scenarios worth tracking:

The market mood is currently mixed: cautious optimism on the wallet data, and latent unease about leverage. FOMO, impatience, and the must get in now feeling are particularly dangerous at this level — it's worth recognizing them in one's own reaction.

Our own stance: this is not the market phase to position with aggressive leverage. A gradual approach to spot accumulation — and pricing in a liquidation shock as a realistic scenario — sits closer to what the current data justifies. But this is our reading, not financial advice; the decision and the risk remain everyone's own responsibility, and the market has proven us wrong more than once.
